Who photographed Metallica during the Black Album sessions and tour?
Answer
Ross Halfin
Answer
Ross Halfin
Ross Halfin photographed Metallica during the Black Album sessions and the world tour that followed. Halfin had been documenting the band since the 1980s and was present at One on One Studios in Los Angeles.
His photographs capture recording, rehearsals, backstage scenes and performances from the 1991–1993 touring period. They became an important visual record of Metallica’s transition from cult metal act to global stadium headliner.
Halfin later assembled images from the era in the book Metallica: The Black Album in Black and White. He is sometimes confused with designers credited for the album’s graphic packaging, but Halfin’s role was photography and visual documentation.
