James Hetfield wrote and performed the main guitar solo on “Nothing Else Matters” from Metallica (1991).
The song began as a private guitar idea Hetfield played while touring. Its arpeggiated opening and reflective lyrics developed into one of Metallica’s most recognizable ballads, contrasting with the band’s usual thrash-oriented reputation.
Kirk Hammett is widely associated with Metallica’s lead-guitar solos, which causes the common mix-up. On this recording, however, Hetfield handled the featured solo, while orchestral arrangements by Michael Kamen expanded the song’s emotional scale.
“Nothing Else Matters” became a major single and a concert staple. Its success showed that Metallica could reach a broad audience without abandoning the band’s identity or guitar-driven writing.
