Which 1991 Metallica album song was written by James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, and Jason Newsted?

The story behind the answer

"My Friend of Misery" was written by James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, and Jason Newsted.

Newsted originally wrote the main riff as part of an intended instrumental. Instrumentals had appeared on every previous Metallica album, but the idea developed into a vocal song for The Black Album. Hetfield and Ulrich contributed to the completed composition, with Hetfield writing the lyrics.

The song is notable because it represents one of Newsted's clearest songwriting contributions on the album. Although he was an important member of the touring and recording lineup, Metallica's songs were usually chiefly associated with the Hetfield-Ulrich writing partnership.

The track appears late on the album, before "The Struggle Within." Its reflective lyrics and prominent bass-centered opening give it a different character from the album's most direct singles.
