Who plays Agent Smith?
Answer
Hugo Weaving
Answer
Hugo Weaving
Hugo Weaving plays Agent Smith in The Matrix.
Agent Smith is a sentient computer program assigned to police the simulated world and suppress humans who threaten the machines’ control. Weaving gives him a clipped, formal voice and controlled physicality, making Smith seem less like a conventional villain and more like an impersonal system that has developed contempt for humanity.
Smith is Neo’s principal antagonist in the original trilogy. Although he begins as an Agent serving the Matrix, he later becomes increasingly independent and dangerous, eventually behaving like a virus that can replicate through other people connected to the system.
Weaving reprised the role in The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions. The franchise later used different performers for Smith in The Matrix Resurrections, including Jonathan Groff, so Hugo Weaving is the canonical answer for the original 1999 film and its first trilogy, not every later incarnation.
