Who played Captain Edward Smith in James Cameron’s Titanic?

The story behind the answer

Bernard Hill played Captain Edward Smith in James Cameron’s Titanic.

Edward Smith was the real captain of RMS Titanic on its maiden voyage in April 1912. Cameron’s film presents him as the senior officer responsible for the ship as it travels from Southampton toward New York. Hill appears in several scenes showing the captain receiving warnings, responding to the collision, and confronting the disaster’s consequences.

The historical Titanic struck an iceberg in the North Atlantic on the night of April 14, 1912, and sank in the early hours of April 15. Smith died in the sinking. The film combines this documented event with the fictional romance between Jack Dawson and Rose DeWitt Bukater.

Victor Garber played shipbuilder Thomas Andrews, not Captain Smith. Bill Paxton played Brock Lovett in the modern framing story, while Danny Nucci played Fabrizio. Bernard Hill’s performance is therefore tied to the historical captain, not one of the fictional passengers.
