In James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water, Tonowari leads the Metkayina clan.
Tonowari is the chief of the reef-dwelling Metkayina, a Na’vi people living around the tropical ocean moon of Pandora. He is portrayed by Cliff Curtis and is married to Ronal, the clan’s spiritual leader and tsahìk.
The Sully family seeks refuge with the Metkayina after renewed danger from the human military forces them to leave the forest. Tonowari initially views the newcomers as outsiders, but he ultimately allows them to stay and learn the reef clan’s customs.
Ronal is often confused with Tonowari because both are senior Metkayina leaders. However, Ronal is the spiritual authority, while Tonowari is the clan’s chief. Eytukan was the former leader of the Omaticaya forest clan in the first Avatar film.
