Who played bass on Metallica's 1991 album Metallica?

The story behind the answer

Jason Newsted played bass on Metallica's 1991 album Metallica.

Newsted had joined Metallica in 1986 after the death of bassist Cliff Burton. By the time of The Black Album sessions, he was an established member of the classic lineup alongside James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, and Kirk Hammett.

The album's production gave the bass a more audible and important place in the overall mix. Producer Bob Rock wanted the record to sound less dominated by guitars, helping the rhythm section contribute more weight and definition.

Newsted remained Metallica's bassist until 2001. He is sometimes confused with Robert Trujillo, who joined the band later in 2003, or with Burton, who played on Metallica's earlier albums but not this one.
