Brian Binnie piloted SpaceShipOne on its second Ansari X Prize-winning flight in October 2004.
On 4 October 2004, Binnie flew SpaceShipOne on flight 17P, reaching an altitude of approximately 112 kilometers. The flight completed the second of two required flights within 14 days, securing the Ansari X Prize for the privately funded team behind the spacecraft.
The prize required a reusable crewed spacecraft to carry at least three people, or equivalent mass, to an altitude of 100 kilometers twice within two weeks. SpaceShipOne had already met the first requirement on 29 September 2004, when Mike Melvill was pilot.
Burt Rutan designed SpaceShipOne, while Paul Allen funded the project through Mojave Aerospace Ventures. Binnie’s flight is therefore distinct from Melvill’s earlier X Prize flight.
