Who photographed the iconic January 1990 British Vogue cover featuring five leading supermodels?

The story behind the answer

Peter Lindbergh photographed the iconic January 1990 British Vogue cover featuring five leading supermodels.

The black-and-white image featured Christy Turlington, Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford, Linda Evangelista and Tatjana Patitz. Its relaxed styling and strong group composition helped define a new fashion image in which personality and natural presence mattered as much as elaborate clothing or studio spectacle.

Lindbergh’s photography became closely associated with the rise of the supermodel era. He often favored expressive faces, movement and comparatively restrained styling, creating images that contrasted with highly polished beauty photography.

The cover is frequently discussed as a turning point in fashion-media history, although it was not the only event that created the supermodel phenomenon. George Michael later used the same group of models in his “Freedom! ’90” video, which helped make the image even more widely known.
