Who photographed the famous Earthrise image during Apollo 8?

The story behind the answer

William Anders photographed the famous Earthrise image during Apollo 8.

On December 24, 1968, Apollo 8 passed around the far side of the Moon and saw Earth appear above the lunar horizon. Lunar module pilot William Anders used a Hasselblad camera to record the color photograph that became known as Earthrise.

The crew initially noticed the scene through the spacecraft windows as their view changed during orbit. Frank Borman and James Lovell also discussed and photographed the event, but Anders is credited with taking the iconic color frame most commonly reproduced.

Earthrise became one of the most influential photographs of the space age. It showed Earth as a small, bright world against black space and helped shape public awareness of the planet’s fragility.
