Who mastered the 2021 remaster of Metallica's 1991 album Metallica?

The story behind the answer

Bob Ludwig mastered the 2021 remaster of Metallica's 1991 album Metallica.

The remaster was issued for the album's 30th anniversary and was part of a much larger archival campaign. Greg Fidelman served as executive producer overseeing the new edition's content, while Ludwig handled the remastering at Gateway Mastering. The project presented the original album in updated form without changing its historical identity.

The deluxe package included a remastered double LP, live recordings, demos, rough mixes, DVDs, and other previously unreleased material. That breadth means the 2021 edition is more than a simple reprint of the 1991 album.

George Marino is associated with mastering the original album, which is why his name is a plausible mix-up. Randy Staub worked as an engineer during the original production, and Michael Kamen arranged the orchestral parts for “Nothing Else Matters.” These are separate credits from Ludwig's work on the 2021 remaster.
