Who managed Manchester City to the 2011-12 Premier League title?

The story behind the answer

Roberto Mancini managed Manchester City to the 2011–12 Premier League title.

Mancini had taken charge in December 2009 and delivered the club’s first major trophy in decades by winning the 2010 FA Cup. His 2011–12 team then mounted a title challenge built around Sergio Agüero, David Silva, Vincent Kompany and Yaya Touré.

City won the championship on the final day with a dramatic 3–2 comeback against Queens Park Rangers. Edin Džeko equalised in stoppage time before Agüero scored the famous winning goal moments later. Manchester United also won that day, meaning City took the title on goal difference.

The result ended a 44-year wait for City’s top-flight championship. A common mix-up is associating the club’s later Premier League success with Pep Guardiola, who became manager in 2016; Manuel Pellegrini succeeded Mancini in 2013.
