Who managed Manchester City in their 2026–27 Premier League opening-weekend match?

The story behind the answer

Enzo Maresca managed Manchester City in their 2026–27 Premier League opening-weekend match.

Maresca began his Manchester City reign with a 2–1 comeback victory over AFC Bournemouth at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday 23 August 2026. He had replaced Pep Guardiola, who stepped down after a decade in charge of the club.

Bournemouth took the lead through Marcus Tavernier, but Manchester City recovered late. Marc Guéhi equalised with a header before Joško Gvardiol scored the winning goal in stoppage time.

The match also featured tactical experimentation. Guéhi, normally a defender, started in central midfield, while Nico O’Reilly operated as a number 10. Rayan Cherki came off the bench and assisted both City goals, making an immediate impact in Maresca’s first league game.
