What was the highest-scoring draw of the 2026–27 Premier League opening weekend?

The story behind the answer

Newcastle United’s 2–2 draw with Liverpool was the highest-scoring draw of the 2026–27 Premier League opening weekend.

The match was played at St James’ Park on Sunday 23 August 2026. Each team scored twice, producing four goals in total and giving both clubs one point.

The draw was the only opening-round match in which neither side won while four goals were scored. It also meant both Newcastle United and Liverpool began the campaign with identical records: one match played, no wins, no losses, two goals scored and two conceded.

Liverpool had entered the season under new management, with Andoni Iraola appointed head coach after Arne Slot’s departure. Newcastle also had a new manager, Matthias Jaissle, making the match a notable meeting between two clubs beginning new eras.
