The protagonist of Avatar: The Last Airbender is Aang. He is the series’ central character and the current Avatar, a reincarnated figure responsible for maintaining balance among the world’s four nations.
Aang is an Air Nomad who was discovered in suspended animation inside an iceberg after being missing for 100 years. Katara and Sokka free him near the South Pole, and he soon learns that the Fire Nation has spent a century waging war against the other nations. His quest is to master water, earth, and fire while stopping Fire Lord Ozai.
Aang is also the last surviving airbender after the Fire Nation’s genocide of the Air Nomads. Although he is only 12 when the story begins, he had already become the youngest known airbending master of his era. His cheerful personality, pacifism, and reluctance to take lives often contrast with the enormous responsibility placed on him.
A common mix-up is confusing Aang with Avatar Roku, his immediate predecessor, or Avatar Korra, his successor. Sokka, Katara, and Zuko are major characters, but Aang remains the protagonist.
