Which Avatar succeeds Aang in the franchise timeline?

The story behind the answer

Avatar Korra succeeds Aang in the franchise timeline.

The Avatar reincarnates in a repeating cycle through the four nations. After Aang, an Air Nomad who ended the Hundred Year War, dies, the Avatar spirit is reborn as Korra, a waterbender from the Southern Water Tribe. This makes Korra Aang’s direct successor, not merely the next major Avatar character introduced to viewers.

Korra is the central character of The Legend of Korra, which is set about 70 years after the original series. She begins the sequel already able to bend water, earth, and fire, then travels to Republic City to learn airbending from Tenzin, Aang’s youngest son.

The other options are earlier Avatars. Roku preceded Aang, while Kyoshi and Yangchen belong to still earlier generations. Another frequent confusion comes from release order: The Legend of Korra is a sequel series, but its story follows the in-universe succession directly. Korra’s own successor is introduced in later franchise material as Pavi.
