Who is the only person to win gold medals at both the Summer and Winter Olympics?

The story behind the answer

Eddie Eagan is the only person to win gold medals at both the Summer and Winter Olympics.

Eagan won boxing gold in the light-heavyweight division at the 1920 Summer Olympics in Antwerp. Twelve years later, he joined the United States four-man bobsleigh team that won gold at the 1932 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid.

His achievement spans two different sports and two Olympic seasons. Boxing was part of the Summer Games, while bobsleigh was contested at the Winter Games, making Eagan’s record distinct from athletes who won medals in several disciplines during the same season.

Eagan is sometimes confused with multi-sport Olympians such as Jim Thorpe, who competed in athletics at the 1912 Summer Olympics. Thorpe won Olympic gold in the pentathlon and decathlon, but he did not win at both Summer and Winter Games.
