Pakku is the Northern Water Tribe waterbending master who teaches Aang.
Aang studies under Pakku after traveling to the North Pole with Katara and Sokka. Pakku is one of the most accomplished waterbenders in the tribe and initially refuses to teach Katara because of the tribe’s restrictive tradition that separates combat training from women’s healing instruction.
Katara challenges Pakku in a duel, proving both her ability and her determination. When Pakku recognizes that she wears a necklace made by his former fiancée, Kanna, he learns that she is from the Southern Water Tribe and changes his attitude. He eventually teaches both Katara and Aang.
Pakku is not Hakoda, Sokka and Katara’s Southern Water Tribe father; Piandao is a swordmaster; and Jeong Jeong is a Fire Nation deserter who teaches Aang firebending.
