Answer
Utnapishtim
Answer
Utnapishtim
Utnapishtim is the flood survivor equivalent to Noah in the Epic of Gilgamesh.
In the flood episode of the Babylonian Epic of Gilgamesh, the god Ea warns Utnapishtim to build a great boat and preserve living creatures and human life. Utnapishtim survives the catastrophic flood and later tells Gilgamesh what happened. The story is one of the most famous ancient Near Eastern flood narratives.
The account shares several broad motifs with Genesis, including a divinely announced flood, a large survival vessel, preservation of life, birds sent out to test whether the waters have receded, and a sacrifice after landing. The two stories are not identical: their gods, characters, narrative details, and theological purposes differ.
Utnapishtim is also called Atrahasis in related Mesopotamian traditions. That name connection can cause confusion, but the standard character name in the Gilgamesh flood episode is Utnapishtim.
