Who is the architect of the Villa Savoye?

The story behind the answer

Who is the architect of the Villa Savoye? The Villa Savoye was designed by Le Corbusier.

Le Corbusier, the Swiss-French architect Charles-Édouard Jeanneret, designed the modernist villa with his cousin and collaborator Pierre Jeanneret. Built between 1928 and 1931 in Poissy, near Paris, it was commissioned as a country retreat for the Savoye family.

Villa Savoye is one of the clearest demonstrations of Le Corbusier’s “Five Points of a New Architecture”: pilotis elevating the structure, a roof terrace, an open floor plan, ribbon windows, and a free façade. Its ramp guides visitors through the house and up toward the solarium.

The building was not an effortless success: construction problems, including serious leaks, contributed to its limited early use. The French state acquired it in 1958, it became a historic monument in 1965, and it was restored between 1985 and 1997. In 2016, it joined UNESCO’s World Heritage listing for Le Corbusier’s work.
