In which city was the Bauhaus school relocated to in 1925? Dessau.
The Bauhaus was founded by Walter Gropius in Weimar in 1919, but political pressure in the conservative Thuringian government forced the school to leave. Its Weimar contracts ended in March 1925, prompting the city of Dessau to invite the institution and support a new campus.
Gropius designed the famous Dessau Bauhaus building, whose workshops, studios, auditorium and classrooms expressed the school's belief that art, craft and industry should work together. Construction began in 1925, and the building was inaugurated on 4 December 1926. Many interiors and furnishings were produced in Bauhaus workshops, including work associated with Marcel Breuer, Marianne Brandt and Gunta Stölzl.
Dessau was the Bauhaus's longest-lasting location, operating there from 1925 to 1932. It later moved to Berlin under Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, but closed in 1933 under pressure from the Nazi regime. A common mix-up is confusing Dessau with Weimar, the school's original home, or Berlin, its final German location.
