Which building, completed in 2022, is the tallest in the European Union?

The story behind the answer

The Varso Tower is the tallest building in the European Union and was completed in 2022.

Varso Tower stands in Warsaw, Poland, as the centerpiece of the Varso office complex. Designed by Foster + Partners and developed by HB Reavis, the tower reaches 310 metres, including its architectural spire, and has 53 storeys.

Construction began in December 2016. The building was topped out in February 2021, when the final piece of its spire brought it to full height, but the complex was completed in September 2022. Its height surpassed Frankfurt’s Commerzbank Tower, which had previously held the European Union record at 259 metres.

The question refers specifically to the European Union, not to Europe as a whole. Buildings such as St Petersburg’s Lakhta Center and several Moscow towers are taller, but Russia is not an EU member. The Shard in London was once the EU’s tallest, but the United Kingdom left the European Union in 2020. Varso Tower is also Poland’s tallest building and has a usable roof height of about 230 metres.
