Who is directing the upcoming film Practical Magic 2?

Susanne Bier is directing the upcoming film Practical Magic 2.

Bier was announced as the sequel’s director in May 2025, after Akiva Goldsman had already been attached to write the script. Georgia Pritchett later joined Goldsman as a co-writer, while Kelly Marcel is also credited on the screenplay.

Bier is a Danish filmmaker known for both television and feature films. Her appointment means Practical Magic 2 is being directed by a filmmaker from outside the original movie’s creative team. The first Practical Magic was directed by Griffin Dunne in 1998.

The sequel is an American romantic fantasy film and continues the story of the Owens family. A common mix-up is confusing Bier with Denise Di Novi, who is a producer on the film, or with Alice Hoffman, whose novel The Book of Magic provides the source material.
