Alice Hoffman’s The Book of Magic, the novel behind Practical Magic 2, was published in 2021.
The book is part of Hoffman’s Practical Magic series and continues the Owens family’s story. It was identified during the sequel’s development as the source material for the film, linking the new movie to Hoffman’s literary world rather than making it an entirely original film story.
A common mix-up is confusing The Book of Magic with Practical Magic, the 1995 novel that inspired the first film, or with The Rules of Magic, Hoffman’s 2017 prequel. The Book of Magic is the later novel associated with the sequel.
The movie does not simply repeat the plot of the 1998 adaptation. Instead, it brings the Owens family forward and focuses on a new crisis involving Sally’s daughters, the family curse, and the origins of its magic.
