Who holds the Olympic record for the men’s 100 metres with a time of 9.63 seconds?

The story behind the answer

Usain Bolt holds the Olympic record for the men’s 100 metres with a time of 9.63 seconds.

Bolt set the mark at the 2012 London Olympics, winning the final in 9.63 seconds. It remains the fastest men’s 100-metre performance in Olympic history. Bolt had already won the event at Beijing 2008 and successfully defended his title at London 2012.

The Olympic record is different from the world record. Bolt’s world record is 9.58 seconds, set at the 2009 World Championships in Berlin, so his Olympic-best time is slightly slower. In London, Yohan Blake finished second and Justin Gatlin took bronze.

Bolt later completed a historic third consecutive Olympic 100-metre victory at Rio 2016. His Olympic sprint achievements made him one of the defining athletes of the modern Games, although his 2008 winning time was later officially adjusted after a teammate’s relay disqualification.
