Who founded the Spanish luxury fashion house Balenciaga in 1919?
Answer
Cristóbal Balenciaga
Answer
Cristóbal Balenciaga
Cristóbal Balenciaga founded the Balenciaga fashion house in 1919.
Born in Getaria, Spain, Balenciaga opened his first fashion house in San Sebastián. He later established businesses in Madrid and Barcelona before moving to Paris in 1937, where his sculptural designs earned him exceptional respect among haute couture clients and fellow designers.
Balenciaga was known for innovative silhouettes, including cocoon shapes, barrel lines, tunics, and the sack dress. Christian Dior called him “the master of us all,” a quotation frequently used to describe his influence on twentieth-century couture.
The founder’s full name is Cristóbal Balenciaga, not simply Balenciaga. The modern company retained his surname and became known for ready-to-wear, accessories, and highly distinctive contemporary collections long after his retirement.
