Which French luxury fashion house introduced the Tank watch in 1917?

The story behind the answer

Cartier introduced the Tank watch in 1917.

Louis Cartier designed the watch during the First World War, drawing inspiration from the straightforward, rectangular form of military tanks. Its case and brancards—the parallel vertical sides of the case—created a distinctive geometric silhouette that contrasted with many round watches of the period.

The Tank became one of Cartier’s most recognizable designs and has appeared in numerous variations, including the Tank Américaine, Tank Française, and Tank Louis Cartier. Although often associated with traditional dress watches, the design has been adapted in different sizes, metals, movements, and complications.

A common mix-up is confusing the Tank with Cartier’s Santos, another major Cartier watch design. The Santos originated earlier, around 1904, while the Tank is the rectangular model associated with the 1917 design date. Cartier’s Tank is therefore a watch family, not just one single reference.
