Who founded the French fashion house Givenchy in 1952?

The story behind the answer

Hubert de Givenchy founded the French fashion house Givenchy in 1952.

The designer established the house in Paris after working with prominent French couturiers, including Jacques Fath, Robert Piguet, Lucien Lelong, and Elsa Schiaparelli. His first collection quickly attracted attention for its elegant, relatively youthful approach to haute couture.

Givenchy became especially associated with Audrey Hepburn, who wore his designs both on screen and in public. Their collaboration helped define the visual identity of the house, although Hepburn was a client and friend rather than the founder. The brand later expanded into accessories, menswear, fragrance, and ready-to-wear.

Hubert de Givenchy remained the central creative figure for decades before retiring in 1995. The house subsequently appointed other major designers, including John Galliano, Alexander McQueen, Julien Macdonald, Riccardo Tisci, Clare Waight Keller, and Matthew M. Williams. Those later appointments do not change its founding attribution.
