Who does Genesis say shut the door of Noah’s Ark?

The story behind the answer

Genesis says the Lord shut the door of Noah’s Ark. Genesis 7:16 describes the animals entering in pairs and then states that the Lord shut Noah in after everyone had entered.

The detail gives the closing of the Ark a divine role in the story. Noah is instructed to build the vessel and bring his family and the animals inside, but the final closing is attributed to God rather than to Noah or one of his sons.

This verse is sometimes simplified in artwork and children’s retellings, where Noah is shown closing the door himself. That image is understandable as a visual summary, but it differs from the specific wording of Genesis. The passage also marks the transition from preparation to the Flood’s beginning.
