Who directed the Red Wedding episode The Rains of Castamere?

The story behind the answer

David Nutter directed “The Rains of Castamere,” the Game of Thrones episode that contains the Red Wedding. It is the ninth episode of season 3 and the 29th episode overall.

The episode adapts the devastating Red Wedding sequence from George R. R. Martin’s A Storm of Swords. At a wedding feast in the Twins, Walder Frey’s forces betray and murder Robb Stark, his mother Catelyn, and many of their followers. The title also refers to the Lannister song “The Rains of Castamere.”

Nutter was an established television director who had already directed “The Old Gods and the New” and “A Man Without Honor” in season 2. He also directed the following season 3 episode, “Mhysa,” making him responsible for both the massacre and its immediate aftermath.

A common mix-up is confusing Nutter with Alex Graves, who directed several later Game of Thrones episodes, including “The Lion and the Rose.” Neil Marshall directed “Blackwater,” while Alan Taylor directed “The North Remembers” and “Valar Morghulis.”
