Wex Pyke is the mute squire who witnesses Bran and Rickon Stark fleeing Winterfell in the novels. He serves Theon Greyjoy and survives the destruction of the castle by hiding in the godswood’s heart tree.
Wex is present during the search for Bran and Rickon after their disappearance. Theon notices that the search party finds wolf tracks but no continuing trail from Hodor, leading him to suspect that the fugitives have fooled them. Wex later returns to Winterfell before the castle’s final collapse.
From his hiding place, Wex sees Bran and Rickon depart with their direwolves and companions. He follows Rickon, Osha, and Shaggydog’s route far enough to learn that they cross the Bay of Seals toward Skagos. His knowledge becomes important when the Manderlys recover him and realize that his muteness does not mean he lacks intelligence.
Wex is often confused with Theon’s other attendants or with characters involved in the search, such as Jojen Reed. Jojen is one of Bran’s companions, but Wex is the witness who remains behind and observes the escape.
