Septon Meribald guides Brienne of Tarth to the Quiet Isle in A Feast for Crows. He is an itinerant septon who travels through the war-torn riverlands, offering religious care, practical help, and stories to ordinary people.
Brienne meets Meribald near Maidenpool while searching for Sansa Stark and following reports connected to the Hound. He accompanies Brienne, Podrick Payne, and Ser Hyle Hunt toward Saltpans, then leads them to the nearby Quiet Isle so they can speak with the Elder Brother.
Meribald’s journey also gives the novel one of its clearest reflections on the human cost of war. In his Broken Men speech, he describes how hunger, fear, and violence turn soldiers into desperate outlaws. His compassion contrasts with the brutality surrounding Brienne’s search.
The Quiet Isle is a religious refuge at the mouth of the Trident. Its penitents observe strict silence, while the Elder Brother receives visitors. Septon Eustace is a different religious figure, and “Maribald” is simply a common misspelling of Meribald.
