Jake Nava directed the music video for Beyoncé's 2008 song “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It).”
The video uses a deliberately simple visual concept: Beyoncé and two dancers perform against a plain white background, allowing the choreography, costumes, and camera movement to dominate. The minimalist black-and-white presentation helped the routine become instantly recognizable.
Beyoncé, JaQuel Knight, and Frank Gaston choreographed the routine, which draws on jazz, dance, and music-video performance traditions. The single came from Beyoncé’s third studio album, I Am... Sasha Fierce, and the video became one of the most widely imitated music clips of its era.
Melina Matsoukas directed several other notable Beyoncé videos, which is a common source of confusion. Jake Nava, however, is the credited director of “Single Ladies.” The video won multiple awards, including Video of the Year at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards.
