Who directed the 2018 heist thriller Widows?

Steve McQueen directed the 2018 heist thriller Widows.

The film follows four women who organize a robbery after their criminal husbands die during a failed heist. McQueen co-wrote the screenplay with Gillian Flynn, adapting the 1983 British television series created by Lynda La Plante. The story relocates the action to contemporary Chicago and combines a robbery plot with political corruption and family drama.

Viola Davis, Michelle Rodriguez, Elizabeth Debicki and Cynthia Erivo play the central group. Widows was McQueen's first feature after 12 Years a Slave, which won the Academy Award for Best Picture. Its ensemble and social themes led some viewers to classify it primarily as a crime drama, but the planned robbery and crew structure make it a heist film as well. The movie was released in the United States in November 2018.
