John Huston directed The Asphalt Jungle (1950), a film about a carefully planned jewel robbery.
The story follows criminal mastermind Erwin “Doc” Riemenschneider as he assembles specialists for a Cincinnati jewelry-store heist. The operation depends on a safecracker, a driver, a hooligan, and a corrupt lawyer who finances the plan.
Huston adapted the film from W. R. Burnett’s 1949 novel. Its focus on the robbery’s preparation, execution, and aftermath helped establish the modern crime-film ensemble.
The cast includes Sterling Hayden as Dix Handley, Sam Jaffe as Doc, and Marilyn Monroe as Angela Phinlay. The film received four Academy Award nominations, including Best Director for Huston.
