Who directed the 2015 film Creed?

The story behind the answer

The 2015 film Creed was directed by Ryan Coogler. The film marked Coogler's move from the acclaimed independent drama Fruitvale Station into the established Rocky franchise, while giving the series a new central character in Adonis Creed.

Coogler co-wrote the screenplay with Aaron Covington and developed the story around Apollo Creed's son seeking his own identity as a professional boxer. He brought Michael B. Jordan, his collaborator from Fruitvale Station, into the lead role and also helped shape Rocky Balboa's transition from legendary fighter to mentor.

The director is sometimes confused with Sylvester Stallone, who returned as Rocky and contributed to the screenplay, or John G. Avildsen, who directed the original Rocky. Steven Caple Jr. directed the sequel, Creed II, while Michael B. Jordan made his directing debut with Creed III. Coogler's Creed premiered in 2015 and was widely praised for its performances, writing, and energetic boxing sequences.
