Who directed the 1993 stop-motion film The Nightmare Before Christmas?

The story behind the answer

Henry Selick directed the 1993 stop-motion film The Nightmare Before Christmas.

The story follows Jack Skellington, the Pumpkin King of Halloween Town, who discovers Christmas Town and attempts to take over Christmas celebrations. The film was produced and conceived by Tim Burton, who wrote the story and characters, but Selick directed the animation and production.

Danny Elfman wrote the songs and score and provided Jack’s singing voice, while Chris Sarandon supplied Jack’s speaking voice. Catherine O’Hara voiced Sally, the rag doll who understands the danger in Jack’s plan. The movie used extensive stop-motion animation, requiring physical character models and sets to be adjusted frame by frame.

Because Burton’s name is prominent in the title and marketing, viewers sometimes incorrectly identify him as the director. The full title is The Nightmare Before Christmas, and the film has also been marketed under the alternate title Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas.
