In Tim Burton’s 2007 film Sweeney Todd, Sweeney Todd’s barber shop is located on Fleet Street.
Fleet Street is the setting named in the film’s full title, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. Todd returns to London under an assumed identity and opens a barber shop above Mrs. Lovett’s pie shop, beginning his campaign for revenge against Judge Turpin.
The street is a real thoroughfare in London and has long been associated with the British newspaper industry. The Sweeney Todd legend, however, is fictional and belongs to the tradition of Victorian theatrical melodrama and popular horror.
Burton’s film adapted Stephen Sondheim’s 1979 musical, which itself developed from earlier stage versions of the Sweeney Todd story. Johnny Depp played Todd, Helena Bonham Carter played Mrs. Lovett, and the production won the Academy Award for Best Art Direction and the award for Best Actor for Depp at the Golden Globes.
