In Tim Burton’s 2005 film Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, what is the name of Charlie Bucket’s grandfather who accompanies him?

The story behind the answer

Charlie Bucket’s grandfather who accompanies him in Tim Burton’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is Grandpa Joe.

Grandpa Joe is Charlie’s paternal grandfather and a former worker at Willy Wonka’s factory. When Charlie finds a Golden Ticket, Grandpa Joe volunteers to accompany him on the factory visit, bringing memories of Wonka’s earlier chocolate-making era.

David Kelly played Grandpa Joe in Burton’s 2005 film, while Freddie Highmore portrayed Charlie Bucket and Johnny Depp played Willy Wonka. The screenplay adapts Roald Dahl’s 1964 novel, although it adds or expands material about Wonka’s childhood and his relationship with his father.

Grandpa Joe is sometimes confused with Grandpa George, another of Charlie’s grandparents who appears in the story but does not accompany Charlie into the factory. The film was the second major feature adaptation of Dahl’s novel after the 1971 film Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory.
