In Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland, Alice Kingsleigh is the White Queen’s champion who fights the Jabberwocky.
Alice returns to Underland as a nineteen-year-old after having visited the strange realm as a child. The White Queen, Mirana, tells her that she is the prophesied champion who must defeat the Jabberwocky on the Frabjous Day. Alice eventually accepts the Vorpal Sword and faces the creature in the film’s climactic battle.
The character differs from the young Alice of Lewis Carroll’s books. Burton’s film presents her as an older woman deciding her own future, including whether to accept an arranged marriage and whether to pursue a life beyond Victorian social expectations.
Mia Wasikowska played Alice, while Helena Bonham Carter played the Red Queen and Anne Hathaway played the White Queen. The film was released in 2010 and combines elements from Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass.
