Who directed the 1991 biographical film 'The Doors'?
Answer
Oliver Stone
Answer
Oliver Stone
Oliver Stone directed the 1991 biographical film The Doors.
The film dramatizes the history of the American rock band, focusing especially on singer Jim Morrison. Val Kilmer plays Morrison, with Kyle MacLachlan as keyboardist Ray Manzarek, Frank Whaley as guitarist Robby Krieger, and Kevin Dillon as drummer John Densmore. Meg Ryan plays Morrison’s partner Pamela Courson.
Stone also co-wrote the screenplay with J. Randal Jahnson. He had been interested in the project for years and became closely involved after the film’s development passed through several studios and proposed directors. Production required negotiations with the surviving band members, Elektra Records, and Morrison’s and Courson’s families.
The movie was released by Tri-Star Pictures on March 1, 1991. It received praise for Kilmer’s performance and Stone’s visual style, but some musicians and critics objected to its historical inaccuracies and its highly dramatic portrayal of Morrison. It should therefore be viewed as a stylized biopic, not a documentary.
