Who directed the 1928 biblical adventure film Noah’s Ark?

The story behind the answer

Michael Curtiz directed the 1928 biblical adventure film Noah’s Ark. Produced by Warner Bros., the silent-era epic combines a modern World War I love story with a dramatized retelling of the biblical Flood and the construction of Noah’s vessel.

The film stars Dolores Costello and George O’Brien, with Noah portrayed by Paul McAllister. It was one of Warner Bros.’ major productions during the transition from silent cinema to sound. Although marketed as a large-scale spectacle, the movie’s Flood sequence was created with theatrical effects and mass staging rather than modern digital imagery.

Noah’s Ark is also remembered for the risks involved in filming its flood scenes. Reports of dangerous production conditions and injuries have contributed to its reputation in film history. Michael Curtiz later directed Casablanca, released in 1942, but Noah’s Ark belongs to his earlier silent-film period.
