Who directed the 1928 American biblical epic film Noah’s Ark?

The story behind the answer

Michael Curtiz directed the 1928 American biblical epic film Noah’s Ark. Produced by Warner Bros., the film combines a modern World War I-era romance with a dramatization of the biblical Flood story.

The film starred Dolores Costello and George O’Brien, with Noah portrayed by Paul McAllister. It was an early major production associated with Warner Bros.’ use of large-scale spectacle and, in some versions, synchronized sound effects and music.

Noah’s Ark was released during the transition from silent cinema to sound cinema. It is therefore sometimes described as a part-talkie rather than a fully dialogue-driven sound film. The production is also remembered for dangerous filming practices and a reported on-set accident during the Flood sequence.

Curtiz later became one of Hollywood’s most prolific directors. His best-known later films include Casablanca, released in 1942, and Mildred Pierce, released in 1945.
