Who directed Metallica’s “Nothing Else Matters” music video from The Black Album?

The story behind the answer

Adam Dubin directed Metallica’s “Nothing Else Matters” music video from The Black Album.

The video was filmed in spring 1991 in North Hollywood during the album’s recording period. It premiered on MTV on February 25, 1992, after the song had become one of the record’s most prominent tracks.

Unlike a conventional narrative video, the clip uses footage from the documentary A Year and a Half in the Life of Metallica. It shows the band working in the studio, including James Hetfield playing a Gibson EDS-1275 guitar during the second chorus. Sean Fullan edited the video.

“Nothing Else Matters” was unusual within Metallica’s catalog because it began as a private song Hetfield wrote while touring and feeling homesick. Lars Ulrich heard it and helped bring it into the band’s recording process. Kirk Hammett does not play on the studio recording, making the song one of the few Metallica tracks without his guitar contribution.
