Who directed Metallica’s “Enter Sandman” video, which won a 1992 MTV award?

Wayne Isham directed Metallica’s “Enter Sandman” video, which won a 1992 MTV award.

The promotional film accompanied the lead single from The Black Album. Isham’s direction helped give the song a strong visual identity during the album’s breakthrough period, when music television was an important route to a global audience.

The video won the MTV Video Music Award for Best Rock Video at the 1992 MTV Video Music Awards. That recognition is connected specifically to “Enter Sandman,” not to the album as a whole and not to one of Metallica’s other Black Album videos.

Several directors are associated with the album’s singles, which explains common mix-ups. Matt Mahurin directed “The Unforgiven,” while Adam Dubin directed “Nothing Else Matters.” Wayne Isham also directed Metallica videos outside this album era, but his relevant Black Album credit here is the “Enter Sandman” video.
