Wayne Isham directed Metallica's “Enter Sandman” music video from The Black Album era.
The video was recorded in Los Angeles in June 1991 and premiered on July 30, 1991, shortly before the album's August release. Its imagery connects directly with the song's themes, combining nightmare scenes involving a child with footage of the band performing.
The clip became one of the defining visual introductions to Metallica's new era. “Enter Sandman” itself was the album's lead single, released on July 29, 1991, and it eventually reached number 16 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number five on the UK Singles Chart.
Wayne Isham later directed several other Metallica videos; “Enter Sandman” was the first of six Metallica music videos credited to him. The video also won the MTV Video Music Award for Best Rock Video at the 1992 ceremony.
