Wayne Isham directed Metallica’s “Enter Sandman” music video. The video was recorded in Los Angeles in June 1991 and premiered on July 30, 1991, two weeks before the album’s release.
Its imagery follows the song’s themes of nightmares and bedtime fears. A child experiences frightening dream scenes while the band performs, and the video also includes appearances by actor R. G. Armstrong. The continuous visual flicker became part of its distinctive presentation.
Metallica worked with several directors during the Black Album era, which can lead to mistaken answers. Adam Dubin directed “Nothing Else Matters,” while Matt Mahurin directed “The Unforgiven.” Isham also directed later Metallica videos, including “Wherever I May Roam.”
