Beyoncé is credited as the film’s writer, director and producer. The project followed her 2019 concert documentary Homecoming, which chronicled her 2018 Coachella performances, but Renaissance focuses on a different tour and album era.
The film was distributed theatrically by AMC Theatres Distribution. Its release formed part of a notable 2023 concert-film season, arriving after Taylor Swift’s The Eras Tour concert film and expanding the role of major pop artists in financing and presenting their own theatrical projects.
