Who directed Beyoncé’s 2020 visual album Black Is King?

The story behind the answer

Beyoncé directed the 2020 visual album Black Is King.

Black Is King was written, directed, and executive-produced by Beyoncé. Disney+ released it on July 31, 2020, roughly a year after The Lion King. The project uses songs from The Lion King: The Gift, the companion album Beyoncé curated for Disney’s 2019 film.

The visual album presents a young king’s journey through family, ancestry, identity, and self-discovery. Its imagery draws on African cultures and diasporic traditions, with locations, costumes, choreography, and collaborators from several countries. Beyoncé appears in multiple roles and settings rather than simply performing a traditional concert film.

The project includes music from artists such as Blue Ivy Carter, Jay-Z, Childish Gambino, Kendrick Lamar, and Shatta Wale. Black Is King is separate from Homecoming, which documents Beyoncé’s 2018 Coachella performance, and from the 2019 film itself.
