Who directed Beyoncé’s 2019 film Black Is King?

The story behind the answer

Beyoncé directed her 2019 film Black Is King.

Black Is King is a musical film and visual album written, directed, and executive-produced by Beyoncé. It reimagines the music from The Lion King: The Gift, the companion album she curated for Disney’s 2019 remake of The Lion King.

Disney+ released Black Is King on July 31, 2020. The film uses African and diasporic imagery, elaborate costumes, choreography, and a connected sequence of music videos to tell a coming-of-age story centered on a young king.

The project features appearances by artists including Blue Ivy Carter, Jay-Z, Tina Knowles-Lawson, Lupita Nyong’o, and Pharrell Williams. Jon Favreau directed the 2019 live-action The Lion King, but he did not direct Black Is King.
